Sicily: A timeless attraction

First came the Greeks. Then came the Romans, the Byzantines and the Saracens. Today it’s film stars, royalty, heads of state, painters of masterpieces and famous authors who come to luxuriate in Sicily’s Taormina Bay.

Located on the East Coast, Taormina is one of the brightest jewels in AutoVenture’s weeklong, private, chauffeured tour of Sicily. From its Corso Umberto, a traditional, cobblestone street set aside for pedestrians, to performances in the Ancient Theatre, locals have preserved the best of traditional Sicilian life. In addition to the 10th-century Corvaja Palace and its 13th-century cathedral, guests can enjoy frequent painting exhibitions, fine shopping, and a wealth of art museums, music cafés and pastry shops.

Outside, guests will first notice the incomparable Mediterranean blue water washing up against the beaches 200-meters below, where vacationers enjoy swimming, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing and sunbathing almost eight months of the year. Above the Taormina towers Mt. Etna, Europe's largest active volcano. Visitors will want to take a cable car to the beach, and walk uphill behind the Church of St. Joseph for panoramic views.

Surrounded by gardens of jasmine, orange blossoms, and roses, AutoVenture guests will stay at the San Domenico Palace, a 5-star luxury property located in an ancient Dominican monastery. There is no finer place in the world than Taormina to watch a sunrise and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast on the balcony overlooking this timeless paradise.

For those unfamiliar with Sicily, an AutoVenture guided tour is the surest way of getting closest to the culture, and of capturing an unforgettable land.
