Established by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1891, the museum is based around the personal collections of the Austrian Emperors, and features masterpieces from all over Europe. Half Day Historical

Few cities can claim a reputation for luxury to match that of Vienna. Find out why on this 4 hour tour. Bounded on the north by the Danube River, the southern edge of central Vienna is defined by a sweeping avenue lined with a seemingly unending sequence of monumental architecture. At the west end is a forested park framed by the Rathaus, or city hall, and the legendary Burgtheater, where the Imperial court watched the debut of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and others. Next is the Volksgarten, a refreshing green expanse between the Austrian Parliament building and the Hofburg Palace, home to Austria’s rulers since the 13th century, from dukes to presidents. The twin Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History frame the way from the palace to the modern Museumsquartier. After this parade of past Imperial grandeur, you will hardly expect it to be topped. The final stop however, Schonbrunn Palace, will do just that. The high Baroque complex includes over 1,400 rooms, acres of gardens, and even the world’s oldest zoo.

Half Day Vienna Woods

Outside the city center, the Vienna Woods provide the locals with a bucolic respite from city life, and offer you a fascinating 4 hour day trip opportunity. Head south of the city to Liechtenstein Castle, a romantic hilltop structure restored in the 19th century. The original castle gave its name to its medieval owners, who in turn rule the eponymous modern country. Afterward, visit the monastery of Heiligenkreuz, a charming medieval abbey, and the oldest Cistercian establishment in the world. The final stop is the hunting lodge of Mayerling, the center of Imperial intrigue in 1889, when the heir to the Austrian throne and his mistress ended their affair by suicide pact, scandalizing the royal family.
