Half day City

Although Munich’s cavernous beer halls are not to be missed, save some time for the city’s other sights, reachable on this 4 hour tour of the Bavarian capital. Begin at the Koenigsplatz, a calming green space surrounded by galleries ranging from Ancient Greek artifacts to abstract modern art. The most famous of these is the Alte Pinkothek, a world-class collection of paintings, especially by Albrecht Durer and other German masters. Next head to the city center to visit Marienplatz. An airy plaza nestled amongst the cluster of red tile roofs, the area is full of shimmering Baroque sculpture and the city hall, a neo-Gothic giant famous for its elaborately decorated bell tower. Finally, relax by the Isar river and visit the Deutsches Museum, the largest museum of science and technology in the world.

Half day Dachau

Located in the Munich suburbs is Dachau, site of the prototype Nazi concentration camp built in 1933. This 4 hour trip is a must for history buffs, and its destination is an important, if uninviting, chapter in Western history. A somber and sobering experience, the complex has been rebuilt as an open air museum where the legacy of the Nazi regime’s cruelty and the Holocaust is on full display. Built to detain political prisoners, the camp went on to imprison Jews, foreign nationals, and other enemies of Nazi control. Most of the original barracks have been razed to their foundations, but a few have been rebuilt to their harsh and inhumane specifications. The expansive facility is now filled with memorials and chapels of all faiths, dedicated to those who suffered there.

Full day Nurnberg

Nuremberg’s rich medieval heritage is largely overshadowed by its prominent role in the Nazi regime, but both aspects are explored in depth on this 10 hour day trip. The first part of the tour focuses on the former, with a visit to the Kaiserburg castle. As a residence of the Holy Roman Emperors for almost 500 years, it contains a wide array of medieval buildings and fortifications. The residence of Albrecht Durer, the most celebrated artist of the Northern Renaissance, who lived and worked in Nuremberg, is next. Continuing to the edge of the city, the monumental Nazi rally grounds can be explored. Now in varying states of disrepair, the parade grounds and colonnades immortalized in Nazi propaganda served as the center of Hitler’s party rallies, which held as many as half a million participants. The final stop will be the Palace of Justice, where Nazi war criminals were tried following the end of World War II.

Full day Bavarian Royal Castles

The romantic alpine countryside of Bavaria presents its treasures, both famous and hidden, on this 10 hour adventure. Travel up through quaint and inviting farms and mountain valleys before arriving in the village of Garmisch. A medieval settlement, most of the town was built around hosting the 1936 Winter Olympic Games. Nearby, the tour continues with the Benedictine abbey of Ettal. After its destruction in the 18th century, it was rebuilt in Baroque magnificence. White-and-pink marble walls ring a round chapel, splashed with myriad gold furnishings and crowned by a domed ceiling painted with a massive fresco of heavenly scenes. Next are the castles at Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. The personal creations of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castles were purpose built to evoke romantic visions of medieval Europe and the mythology of Richard Wagner.
