Full Day City TourDiscover Madrid’s many faces with this comprehensive, 8 hour tour of the Spanish capital. Start your journey at the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of old Madrid. An airy open space surrounded by otherwise winding and narrow streets, the Plaza is a focal point for both local life and travelers. At the edge of this part of town is the dazzling Royal Palace. Sumptuous interiors enclosed within elegant Baroque facades highlight the complex. Modern Madrid emanates outward from the Puerta del Sol, where the tour stops next. Framed by modern shopping centers and monumental sculptures, the plaza forms the geographic center of Spain’s roadways. The journey continues down Carrera de San Jeronimo, past the house of Parliament to the Prado Museum. Home of a collection of paintings renowned worldwide, the galleries include collections by Goya, Velasquez, Titian, and countless other masters. Finish at the serene Parque Buen Retiro, where fountains, shaded green paths, and myriad flowers offer a welcome relief from the urban madness. 8 hrs |

Full Day ToledoAn easy drive south of Madrid, the city of Toledo and its fascinating history are the setting for this 8 hour day trip. Known as the “city of 3 cultures,” its many landmarks are the legacy of both coexistence and conflict between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The city skyline is dominated by the Toledo Cathedral, built over an existing mosque during the Reconquista. The other towering structure to be seen is the Alcazar, an ancient palace rebuilt by Emperor Charles V, where some of Spain’s most powerful monarchs held court. Other sights include the church of Santa Maria la Blanca, built by Moorish craftsmen as a synagogue, and El Transito, a lavishly decorated synagogue, both of which are currently museums. As a former royal court, the city also hosted significant patronage of the arts, especially the painter El Greco, whose restored residence houses his greatest works. 8 hrs |

Full Day Escorial & Valley of Fallen (Closed Mondays)Travel to the hills of the Sierra Guadarrama northwest of Madrid to visit the legacy of Spain’s past. The first stop is the Valley of the Fallen. Built onto, into, and around a towering rocky outcrop, the complex was commissioned by Francisco Franco to commemorate the victims of the Spanish Civil war. A crypt housing the remains of soldiers from both sides occupies a Basilica built within the mountain, while the tallest monumental cross in the world rises directly above. The second stop is the Royal residence of El Escorial. The grandiose, 16th century granite structure comprises a basilica, palace and monastery. Its most stunning feature, however, is the Pantheon of Kings, where rows of marble tombs hold the remains of nearly every Spanish Monarch to rule since the early 16th century. 8 hrs |

Full Day Avila, Segovia, La GranjaAlthough Madrid’s sprawling metropolis is more than enough to fill most itineraries, the nearby towns of the Castilian countryside visited on this 10 hour day trip are not to be missed. The first is Avila. Perfectly preserved medieval walls form an unbroken ring, restraining the town to its intimate historical dimensions. The result is an enchanting town bursting with life. Several churches including the Convent of San Jose, founded by St. Teresa, and Basilica of San Vicente are architecturally significant as well as popular pilgrimage sites. Next is the town of Segovia, known for its iconic Roman aqueduct, a 2000 year old structure that remained in service into the 19th century. The Segovia Alcazar might appear familiar, as an inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle. The final stop is the La Granja palace outside the city. A neo-classical Royal Residence used since the reign of Philip V, it is famed for its wonderful gardens and elaborate fountains. 10 hrs |
