Start in Rome with the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran. The Lateran complex was home to the Papacy before the construction of the Vatican Palaces, and houses the “Holy Stairs” from biblical Jerusalem. The Appian Way then begins in earnest at the Baths of the Emperor Caracalla. Built during the early 3rd century CE, the ruins of the complex remain impressive, littered with remnants of spectacular mosaic tiling and decoration. The prime example of Roman engineering, the Via Appia was the principle route to southern Italy, remaining in partial in use today.
