Explore one of the most scenic and uniquely spectacular palaces Europe has to offer on this 4 hour tour of the Alhambra of Granada. Entering through the Justice Gate, The Palace of Charles V dominates the central area. An immense rectangular facade in Renaissance style adorns the outside, while a majestic circular portico encircles the inner courtyard. Adjacent to the Renaissance structure is the sprawling Moorish Nasrid Palace. Deceptively unadorned from the outside, the interior explodes with Baroque flourish. Near the Cathedral memories of Muslim Granada live on in the Alcaiceria, the historic silk market. Finish the tour with the Alhambra itself.

Known as the “city of 3 cultures,” its many landmarks are the legacy of both coexistence and conflict between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The city skyline is dominated by the Toledo Cathedral, built over an existing mosque during the Reconquista. The other towering structure to be seen is the Alcazar, an ancient palace rebuilt by Emperor Charles V, where some of Spain’s most powerful monarchs held court. Other sights include the church of Santa Maria la Blanca, built by Moorish craftsmen as a synagogue, and El Transito, a lavishly decorated synagogue, both of which are currently museums. As a former royal court, the city also hosted significant patronage of the arts, especially the painter El Greco, whose restored residence houses his greatest works.

The second stop is the Royal residence of El Escorial. The grandiose, 16th century granite structure comprises a basilica, palace and monastery. Full Day Avila, Segovia, La Granja

Although Madrid’s sprawling metropolis is more than enough to fill most itineraries, the nearby towns of the Castilian countryside visited on this 10 hour day trip are not to be missed. The first is Avila. Perfectly preserved medieval walls form an unbroken ring, restraining the town to its intimate historical dimensions. The result is an enchanting town bursting with life. Several churches including the Convent of San Jose, founded by St. Teresa, and Basilica of San Vicente are architecturally significant as well as popular pilgrimage sites. Next is the town of Segovia, known for its iconic Roman aqueduct, a 2000 year old structure that remained in service into the 19th century. The Segovia Alcazar might appear familiar, as an inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle. The final stop is the La Granja palace outside the city.
